Attorney Sarah B. Akins of Bluffton has been named one of the best young lawyers in Georgia. Akins is with the firm of Ellis Painter Ratterree and Adams of Savannah and practices in the area of insurance defense; personal injury. To be eligible for selection, an attorney must be age 40 or younger or in practice for 10 years or less. Attorneys who have been designated "Super Lawyers" in Georgia are asked to nominate the best up-and-coming attorneys they have personally observed in action.

The Hilton Head Island Fire and Rescue Division received a Life Safety Achievement Award for the year 2004 by the Residential Fire Safety Institute. The award recognizes local fire prevention activities that contributed to reducing the number of lives lost in residential fires. The Hilton Head department recorded no fire deaths in structures in 2004.
