Town of Wallkill – The Democrats want to keep control, while John Ward aims to keep his job.<... Wallkill supervisor, board D

November's general election will pit Ward, the incumbent supervisor, against James Mattatall, a former Wallkill cop and retired correction captain.

His goal, he said, is to continue lowering tax rates and correcting the problems of the police department, which has been plagued by scandal since the late 1990s.

In 2003, Wallkill, a longtime Republican bastion, swung from Republican to Democratic control. Democrats will try to keep their newfound footing in this year's races.

In the town's 2nd Ward, Republican Richard Mercado, a retired insurance executive, is challenging incumbent Democrat Eric Valentin, who has also secured the Conservative Party line.

For example, he said that in Scotchtown, he successfully increased lot sizes for homes during a time of rapid growth. As a result, he said, homes are more spaced out, there is more foliage, and neighbors are happier.

In the 3rd Ward, Republican Charlie McLean will face incumbent Democrat Kevin Mulqueen, who has also been endorsed by the Working Families Party.
