WILKES-BARRE - Mark Derosa, 30, of Academy Street in Wilkes-Barre, was sentenced Tuesday to three to 14 years in a state prison on numerous burglary-related charges.

Luzerne County Court of Common Pleas Judge Mark Ciavarella sentenced Derosa on charges of theft, criminal conspiracy to commit burglary, burglary, and fleeing and eluding police in four cases.

In the burglary case, Jenkins Township police said Derosa and another man in September 2004 broke into the River Street Ale House on River Road. The two fled when the owners saw them in the building. They were caught a short time later.

John L. Krainik Jr., administrator to the estate of Theresa Navroth, reached the settlement with the insurance company of Thomas Kane, of Vine Street in Plymouth.

Navroth was 76 when she was the passenger of a vehicle driven by Edward Cooney of Nanticoke on Dec. 18, 2004. Cooney stopped his vehicle at a stop sign on North Walnut Street at its intersection with Broadway Street in Nanticoke before driving through the intersection and into the path of Kane's vehicle, which was southbound on Broadway.

Tuesday's settlement approved by Luzerne County Court of Common Pleas Judge Mark Ciavarella, calls for the estate to receive $58,397, attorneys John H. Kennedy and Stephen B. Killian to receive $31,500 for fees, and Kennedy to receive $103 in costs.

The jury awarded Cindy White $2.5 million for injuries she suffered in the collision and $750,000 to her husband, David, for loss of companionship because of the injuries, according to a press release issued by attorneys Thomas Foley Jr. and Robert Foley Jr., both of the Foley Law Firm, which represented the Whites.

A vehicle driven by David White was westbound on U.S. Route 6 on April 24, 2001, near the highway's intersection with Jenkins-Stark Road in Tunkhannock. Cindy White was a passenger in the vehicle, which was in the slow lane of travel on the four-lane road.

A vehicle driven by Jay R. Robinson II of Tunkhannock was westbound on U.S. Route 6 when it turned between slowed vehicles and into the Whites' path.

Cindy White required treatment for a severe disc herniation in her neck. She later had "substantial problems swallowing due to the rubbing on her esophagus from the plate inserted to stabilize the spine as a result of the" wreck.

"We were gratified the jury reviewed all the evidence presented in the case and was able to understand the impact that Mrs. White's injuries have had on her life and on her husband's life," attorney Thomas Foley Jr. said. "However, no amount of financial compensation can ever fully restore the loss that this couple has suffered because of this devastating accident."
