(WJZ) BALTIMORE A Baltimore County family is devastated after their house is destroyed when a fire broke out in their basement shortly after they finished their Thanksgiving Dinner.
The fire began last night, only minutes after she and her family had enjoyed their Thanksgiving feast, which still sits, nearly melted, on the remains of the kitchen table.
Their big-screen television is melted, while keepsakes, antiques, and furniture are all destroyed or coated in a thick, black soot, with one exception: a set of teddy bears Davis' grandchildren gave to her.
"Everything burns around it, [but] those three bears--my grandkids gave them to me, and they said, 'Nana, the bears are still sitting!'" Davis tells WJZ's Derek Valcourt.
She and her family remain shaken, sad for what they lost and happy for what they didn't. Thanksgiving will surely never be the same for them, but today they are thankful they are still here.
"I'm still alive, give thanks, that's my Thanksgiving gift. To give thanks to God that I'm still here and all those things are material things, are replaceable, but not my life," she says.
Orleans Davis employer, Seasons Hospice, is taking up a collection to help her family. Donations can be made payable to Orleans Davis at Seasons Hospice, 7008 Security Boulevard, Suite 300, Baltimore, 21244, Attention: Marty Irlbacher.
