Puppies have once again arrived at the shelter in multiples. In fact - there are 10 of them. Akaysha, Alexia, Brandy, Blondie, Carleigh, Carissa and their brothers Xavier, Yancy, Yarborough and Zachary are 7-week-old shepherd and border collie mixes. They are at the shelter because their former "humans" couldn't find homes for them.
Bridgette is true "purrfection!" She's a kitten in a stunning black and white "tuxedo" coat. Long silky black fur covers her body except for a white patch on her chest, a white streak that runs down her tummy and four white feet.
Chadwick recently became a "senior citizen" and is looking for someone to grow old with. He's a terrier and cocker spaniel mix. When he was brought to the shelter, he had an injured leg. That's completely healed and now he's just waiting for you to come and adopt him. Chadwick was found limping around on West Graham.
Oreo and Kitty are at the shelter because their beloved human companion recently passed away and there was no one who would take them. Oreo - just like he sounds - is a 1-year-old black and white cat who's already been neutered. He's great with children and has always been an indoor-only cat.
Kitty is a 2- or 3-year-old sweetie who's all dressed up in a short brown and tan striped suit. Her bright green eyes are accented with double "wings."
Oreo's and Kitty's situation is, unfortunately, way too common. Please make arrangements for someone to take care of your pets when you are unable to do so. You can't automatically assume that your family will take care of your pets. They may have pets of their own or allergies that would prevent them from taking your beloved pet into their home. This is a mutual decision that needs to be made when you bring a new companion animal into your life. It not only guarantees that the animal will have a place to go if you are no longer able to take care of it, but it will also give you peace of mind in knowing that you have provided for your "furfriend."
Support Our Local Animal Shelter and the Council Bluffs Animal Shelter have joined "paws" with Helen Woodward Animal Center, the Iams Company and more than 2,000 pet adoption center for "Iams Home 4 the Holiday 2005," an event organized to raise awareness of the joys of owning shelter-adopted pets.
All pets adopted during "Iams Home 4 the Holidays 2005" will go home with their new family as well as an Iams Starter Kit containing tips for caring for their new family member.
Priscilla was apparently allergic to something at her former home - but she's been just fine at the shelter. She's a 2-year-old wonderful combination of Dachshund and long-haired Chihuahua. She aspires to be an "only child" in an "adult only" environment. Priscilla has a current rabies vaccination and is anxiously awaiting your arrival.
Sunny Boy is a super affectionate, 2-year-old fellow who has already been neutered. To help him softly pussyfoot around in his striped legs and feet, he has had his front "fingernails" surgically removed. This means, of course, that he needs to be an indoor-only cat. Sunny Boy was found abandoned in the 500 block of North 38th Street.
Sponsor a shelter pet! Have you always wanted to help the animals at the shelter but couldn't adopt one - or even come to the shelter - SOLAS has a "purrfect" way for you to help provide for either a cat or a dog for one full year. Kennel sponsorships are now available. Your sponsorship of a kennel will help us provide vaccinations, medical care, special food or anything else that the animals that stay in "your" kennel might need. The cost of a kennel sponsorship is $500 and can be by purchased by either businesses or individuals. In fact - several people could go together to sponsor a kennel. When you sponsor a kennel, your name, the name of your loving companion animal who has passed away, or your businesses' name will be placed on an engraved plaque that will be on the kennel for the next year. This would be a perfect way to memorialize your loving companion animal who has passed away. If you are interested, please contact any SOLAS member.
Abernathy wants you to remember that looks can be deceiving. He's a 10-month to 1-year-old shepherd and husky mix in a very large black and tan suit. This adorable fellow was found "galloping" around in the 500 block of South 32nd Street.
If you'd like to become a SOLAS volunteer and join us in all the fun things that we do throughout the year, please call us at 256-2287 or 968-0822. This could be the most rewarding phone call that you'll make all year.
SOLAS would like to thank our Council Bluffs Wal-Mart for their generous donation of cat litter. Their continued support is very much appreciated.
We would also like to thank 16th Street Appliance for donating a clothes dryer to the shelter. Laundry is a constant at the shelter with all the blankets that are used to keep the dogs off the concrete floor in their kennels and for the cats to curl up on in their kennels.
If you need to surrender your pets - please do so during regular business hours. They are Monday - Friday 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. and Noon to 4 p. m. on Saturdays.
Courtesy of Petfinder.com, any animal that is adopted from our shelter is eligible for free pet health insurance for one month. Please check out Petfinder.com for more information.
If you are interested in making a tax-deductible donation to SOLAS to help us help the shelter animals, please call us at 256-2287, e-mail us at solas@cox.net or mail a donation to SOLAS, 1204 North 28th Street, Council Bluffs, IA 51501-0751. All donations are very much appreciated.
Remember that SOLAS is offering "Senior Citizen" coupons worth $40 off the cost of the spay/neuter of any cat or dog adopted from the Council Bluffs Animal Shelter. These coupons will be available to anyone over age 55. We reserve the right to ask for a photo ID. We hope that this will enable more seniors to adopt animals from our shelter. If you're under age 55 - we have $25 coupons to help offset the cost of spaying/neutering of any cat or dog adopted from the shelter.
These coupons are made possible through a grant from the Iowa West Foundation. This grant was made available thanks to Ameristar, Bluffs Run and Harrah's.
Please remember that responsible pet owners always have their pets spayed or neutered. This not only makes for a better pet, but it also help reduce the number of pets that are put to death each year at humane societies and animal shelters, including the Council Bluffs Animal Shelter. Your actions can help reduce this number and save many lives each year.
