PHILADELPHIA, Oct. 6, 2005 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- In recognition of October as Breast Cancer Awareness Month, the CIGNA Foundation today announced a grant of $25,000 to the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation for the organization's distinguished work in women's health. The Komen Foundation funds research and awareness programs aimed at combating breast cancer, a disease that claims a life every 13 minutes.

This year marks "A Decade of Denim" for CIGNA employees in their 10th year of support for the Komen Foundation. During Denim Day, an annual tradition taking place Oct. 7, CIGNA employees will purchase pink ribbons for $5, which entitles them to wear denim to work while donning the pink ribbons. As in past years, 100 percent of employee donations will go to the Komen Foundation to fund screening, treatment, research and education.

"Breast cancer awareness, education, prevention and treatment are extremely important to CIGNA," said John Cannon, senior vice president, CIGNA Public Affairs. "With an employee population that is 75 percent female, each of us knows someone who has been touched by breast cancer - whether it is a coworker, a neighbor, a friend, a mother, sister, aunt or grandmother. This issue is one that everyone at CIGNA takes to heart."

Earlier this year, CIGNA received the first "Celebrate Life" award at the Celebrate Life 2005 luncheon for 1,000 breast cancer survivors coordinated by the Philadelphia Affiliate of the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation. In making the award to CIGNA, the Komen Foundation noted CIGNA's year-round investment of time, talent, creativity and generosity to reach more people, raise more money, and save more lives.
