Many Britons would give up sex if it meant they can live to 100, research has revealed. An Ipsos MORI survey carried out for BUPA found that 40% of people would become celibate if it would prolong their life.

More women than men (48% compared to 31%) said they would give up sex to live longer, while 42 per cent said they would sacrifice travelling to ensure they lived to 100.

According to the research, which was carried out among 1,003 people, the majority of people want to live to age 85 on average, while almost half (49%) say scientists should continue to keep trying to prolong people’s life spans.

BUPA medical director Dr Andrew Vallance-Owen said the findings were significant given the fact that Britain is facing an “ageing time bomb” with major challenges presented by retirement, the desire to live longer and the increasing burden of caring for older people.
