KELLS Under-18s maintained their unbeaten start to the season and are joint leaders of the Halifax Home Insurance National Youth League after round three of this season’s fixtures.

However, it was the visitors who were first on the score sheet when, after six minutes of play, Cougars loose forward Ben Sagar slotted over a penalty after an infringement at the play the ball, to put his side 2-0 in front.

This early set-back sparked the home side into life and virtually from this point on they dominated the game and put the visitors under pressure for long spells of the game.

Second-rower Dane Weatherill opened the scoring for Kells when he crossed the whitewash after 12 minutes, a try that was converted by loose-forward Tony Burns to edge Kells ahead at 6-2.

Nine minutes later Burns extended their lead when he crossed after some good work by scrum-half Brenden Riley and stand-off Tyrone Dalton. Burns converted himself to make it 12-2.

But, with three minutes of the half remaining, the visitors were pressing for more points of their own near to the Kells line. From the resulting scrum after the visitors dropped the ball, and Dalton booted the ball up field for Riley to chase, a full 90 metres chase, which he did brilliantly outpacing the Cougars chasing defenders, to score a great try.

Next on the score sheet for Kells was winger Luke Douglas as he showed a clean pair of heels to the visitors defence on his way to a touch down after 12 minutes of the half had been completed. Burns again converted for a 30-2 lead.

Kells had some fine individual performances, the half-back pairing of Dalton and Riley caused havoc at times with the Cougars defence, prop forward Michael Ramsden made very good yards when called upon to carry the ball away, second rower Sean Flanagan was excellent in both attack and defence.

Kells: Ashley MacDonald, Luke Douglas, Scott Nichol, Steve McMillan, Kevin Orr, Tyrone Dalton, Brenden Riley, Michael Ramsden, Chris Smith, Paul Lowery, Sean Flanagan, Dane Weatherill, Tony Burns. Replacements: Gary Fox, Ryan Prince, Tom Harrison and Ashley Kilpatrick.
