About six years ago, Chris Ostrand was reviewing his life goals, when he decided it was time to take action on one of them and become a volunteer.

So he called Big Brothers Big Sisters of Northeastern Wisconsin Inc. and eventually was paired with Matt Kaercher, now a 15-year-old Green Bay East High School student. The two enjoy playing lacrosse, shooting hoops, working on homework and just hanging out, he said.

For his efforts, the local Big Brothers Big Sisters agency will receive $1,000 to support registration costs of bringing in more volunteer "bigs." Ostrand will receive his award today at a Packers Power Lunch at Lambeau Field.

The Greeting Card Association is honoring one Big Brother or Big Sister each month from a different state, according to Juliette Bogus, national spokeswoman for Heroes in Our Midst. Ostrand was nominated by the local agency, based on the length of his relationship with his "little" and his connection with Matt.

"He is somebody who looks above and beyond," Bogus said. "He started out with wanting to give back to the community and in the process helped redirect Matt's life and help him make good life choices."

Ostrand, an insurance broker with Associated Bank, wasn't aware he was nominated for the award, so he said the win came as a surprise. But he's not in it for the accolades.
