The campaign, formerly called the Thanksgiving Appeal, now is known as the Catholic Ministries Appeal. The name was changed to more specifically state the purpose, Clark said.
The money goes will go toward diocesan missions and services, including schools, Catholic Charities, leadership training and youth ministry, as well as day-to-day expenses such as insurance and information technology..
"It's very important to our day-to-day life," said Bishop Matthew H. Clark, who announced the campaign kickoff at Our Mother of Sorrows Church, the oldest parish in the diocese.
Clark said the campaign had 37,000 donors last year, down from 39,000 the previous year. He said $4.6 million toward last year's $5.3 million goal came through the appeal; the rest was made up by parish churches.
