After the Bedford Fire Department suffered a devastating loss in early February, the department will soon be able to return to familiarity. The department hopes to return to its new fire station on Church Street in downtown Bedford by Thanksgiving. The new station is in the same location as the former building that was destroyed by arson.
Bedford fire chief Josh Jamiel said the building's completion is at its halfway point and plumbing work is being done. Once the plumbing is finished, Jamiel said, the concrete will b e poured inside the seven-bay facility.
The new fire station will be larger than the destroyed building. The new station is twice the size of the old building and has higher doors to allow newer models of fire trucks for future needs. The new building also features a better kitchen area, more rooms for storage, a fitness room and a bigger meeting space for training and meetings.
The construction started in April but was delayed for three months because the department had to wait on construction-related permits. Insurance money is paying for the new facility.
