The Pine Hill Estates neighborhood, with its manicured lawns and stately homes, was besieged Tuesday afternoon by fire trucks, police cruisers and ambulances.

Michael Fry was home alone when the fire started in the garage. He was using a computer in another part of the house when a neighbor called and said he had spotted smoke coming from the garage.

A Brunnerville firefighter who lives in Pine Hill Estates also spotted the smoke and called 911. Mearig works about a mile from the development and was among the first to arrive.

The fire spread from the garage into the attic and across the roof. High winds pushed the flames, and the house crumbled as about 50 firefighters sprayed water on the blaze.
