EDGEWATER -- As a breast cancer survivor , Lillie Shockney can appreciate the impact this disease... Wiping out fatal disease g

That is why the pair and about 100 motorcycle riders joined forces Sunday to participate in the inaugural Leather and Lace Motorcycle Club's Search and Destroy Breast Cancer poker run.

It is a story she has heard too often as the administrative director of the Johns Hopkins Breast Center in Baltimore, beneficiary of the fundraiser.

Chaffin, Leather and Lace's national president, said the club took on the breast cancer cause after losing one of its sisters, Mary Carson, in August 1999. Since then, chapters in Pennsylvania and New York have sponsored fundraising rides to bring awareness and dollars to the fight. Sunday's was the Edgewater chapter's first run.

Shockney said as the baby boomer generation ages the number of breast cancer diagnoses is expected to increase, with numbers reaching 12 to 14 percent of the female population nationally.

"Some are afraid it will hurt," Shockney said. For others it is a fear of the unknown. Still other women without health insurance believe they cannot afford the testing.

Chaffin said Sunday's event, which wrapped up at a brassiere-strewn Chaps Steakhouse in Edgewater, raised about $6,000. The bras were part of the fundraiser. Organizers hope to collect an additional dollar for each one donated.
